- History / Biography
- The firm of Gaboury Préfontaine Perry was hired along with the firm Number 10 Architectural Group for the construction of the Churchill Townsite re-development in 1971. Prior to construction, regional and climatic studies were done and meetings with local residents were held to assess the needs of the community. The project site was chosen to minimize expropriations during construction, as well as future expropriations if the complex expanded over the years. The site was also at a higher land elevation, allowing for clear views of the Churchill River and Hudson’s Bay from the complex. Its location also minimized snow drifting and provided cover from strong winds.
- Structures within the town centre were built close together to reduce exposure to cold and windy weather. These structures covered an area of 220,000 square feet and included a 13 classroom high school for 350 students with a 10,000 volume library, a health centre with 31 beds, social development offices, and a medical and dental clinic, as well as a recreation centre with a swimming pool, a curling rink, a gymnasium, a bowling alley, a theatre and a hockey rink. The complex also held multiple administrative offices and an exhibition space. The concrete and steel complex also included a multi-level interior street system and, like many of Gaboury’s designs, allowed for the maximum penetration of sunlight into the building. The complex was completed in 1975.
- The work in Churchill also included the construction of housing and apartments. Gaboury worked as principal architect on this project in collaboration with design architect Jim Nishikawa from the Churchill Consortium. Due to the isolation of, and the short construction season in the community, housing components were prefabricated in a warehouse in Fort Churchill using local labour to facilitate the construction process. Consequently, designs by Gaboury had to account for prefabrication to allow for the completed 200 housing units and 63 apartment units to be towed to their permanent locations. In 1972, the prefabricated housing components were moved to an airport hangar in Fort Churchill to complete their construction. The 20,500 square meter project was completed in 1974. Landscaping and road work was completed in the following year.
