Fort Maginnis, M.T. Sept. 27th 1880 To whom it may concern The Major Comanding this Post Advises the Half-Breed Hunters to go + hunt + winter together as usual + as of old to Protect themselves + Horses against Raiding Indians + his personal Opinion as a Comanding Officer is that in Hunting Traveling + in Wintering all in a body they will be in a measure to stand + resist any Difficulty with the Indians as of old + therefore the Major Advises the Half-Breeds to Sepperate not under any Considerations so as to be more safe themselfs + to Locate in a body by themselves not on any Riservation + in being their own safeguard without forfeiting any laws of the Country they might Save an Indian Expedition + being in a Large body by themselves would Doubtless prevent such. This is Approved by the Major Comanding this fort. Witnessed C. McNamara Louis Riel Simon Pepin
