- Scope and Content (English)
- I have often had the pleasure of reading your paper and it is not with little satisfaction that one sees the intelligence with which the rules of taste are observed in it; the merit that distinguishes it has more than once aspired me to the honour of asking a little place in your columns; today you will give me a great sign of your kindness if you see fit to insert the few lines I take the liberty of sending you.
- The Canadian gov't has here at Pointe de Chenes agents who are opening a road from this Lake of the Woods; to see these gentlemen (operate), they seem to undertake their work in an active manner; but notwithstanding the praise I believe in duty to accord them I do not hesitate for a moment to say openly that one can reproach them on other ( ); ( ) gentlemen have without any authority bought for themselves a portion of land for which they have paid to a supposed Indian Chief flour and fat; where did they get these provisions? they reply with an account completely false; the public opens its eyes; and you can ( ); these agents seem suspicious to them; besides, their entry into the country has not been such as to command confidence; it pleased some of them on arriving to scoff at all the people of the Red River; they came here to drive us out of our poor country; instead of paying attention to the laws instituted in the colony for the progress of this very civilization they have publicly disavowed them in selling intoxicating liquor to the Indians who in turn have sold them, without having the power, three thousand "quarries" of land a part of which includes several homes in the village of Pointe de Chenes; I leave it to your readers to think of the consequences of such conduct; these men do not seem to me worthy of the intentions; the Can. Gov't had in sending them here to work in the interest of the people of Red River; would it not have been wiser to gain first the confidence and affection of the people of the country; they hastened to alienate them and make themselves hostile; is not the blame attached to these agents the very same with which to estimate the operations of the Canadian gov't among us.
