- Sending Rev. Dugas to console the Metis prisoners is a new memory of your bounty; the letters I have written are witness of my sentiments and respect; wickedness is not in my nature; the good education from my family, the church and college had a good effect; the Red River troubles seemed necessary and gave me an opportunity to work for the public good; the elections of 1872 and 1874 put me in touch with the Bishop of Montreal and other priests who gave advice and counsel; I leave everything to God; you know my faults and no one appreciates better than you what I tried to do; Christian virtues and Catholic instruction inspired and protected me; the assistance of Ritchot and the clergy in 1870 was the same received in Canada and the United States and led me to believe that God was assisting me; the cure in Benton and the Bishop of St. Albert blessed me and my family; all the French Metis were blessed at St. Laurent; there remains only for you and your clergy to witness that I am a prophet; I ask your protection in what I have to say; Rome is a city of workmen and shops; governments have stripped the papacy of its states and given its patrimony to Humbert; Rome is held captive at the service of the revolution and it is reasonable to assume that the spirit of God could not rest in Rome; the Holy Spirit has chosen another vicar - Ignace Bourget and we consider him the successor of St. Peter in the New World; you are the successor to Bourget; God has chosen Ville Marie as the religious capital of this continent; I have separated from Rome and pray the Metis to do the same; I beg you and your clergy to come to my assistance and you will work miracles; and open up a future to the Catholic nations of Europe; with your help I can exonerate myself, my influence will grow and with Ritchot's help treat with the Government and arrange a New Italy, Bavaria, Ireland, Poland; Dewdney has excellent qualities and such a man will bring success to these ideas; Col. Irvine would be a capable man for British Columbia; our papal authority in America will give to the Catholic nations of Europe the signal to leave for the New World; the French will grow in Quebec and Manitoba; God will abandon the French Republic to the evil spirit which torments it and good Catholics will take hope in the good governments; the Church of Rome will continue to fight the revolution; the Church of the West and the East will act separately without conflict; the glory and virtues of Ignace (Bourget) will shine forth.
