- Scope and Content (English)
- I finally got here; no doubt you have had news; your letters have kept me informed; our cause has made progress; the violation of the treaty of 1870 by Canada has gained us sympathy; all Quebec has joined us; our cause agitates the Confederation; the House expulsed me in an arbitrary and unjust manner; our enemies hoped to stamp out the cause; more than ever it is necessary to agitate constitutionally; we must have twelve electoral divisions in the next provincial election; could you and Royal take this up; I have made known your work for the cause; some have been reserved but I do not blame them; if you protest against the cutting up of the electoral divisions I will protest against the injustices done; lacking the amnesty and responsible government we are not free; we were left to the mercy of the Orangemen; are our officers in the new regime any less detested than those of the Provisional Government; Monseigneur, Ritchot and Lestanc are ill treated; I said to our friends in Canada that Clarke was threatened many times because he was not openly against us; that Royal had been burned in effigy in Winnipeg, because he had pleaded against the cutting up of our parishes, that Girard was hated because he became one of our representatives; that Cunningham was burned in effigy when he was elected by us, that you had been threatened and how Dr. Bird had been treated for supporting our measures; we are not free because we are governed by Canada; as to responsible government I said that the Lieutenant-Governor trespassed against the Constitution in forming a ministry and did not allow the people to exercise their right of approval or disapproval through an election; that our Parliament has no control over the Executive; that the loss of several electoral divisions followed; when I saw that the Governor wished to maintain Beauchemin in St. Vital I understood what Monseigneur, Ritchot had already grasped, that Royal and you understood in 1872 that the favourable moment to demand the re-election of ministers had not arrived; I argued the question of responsible government with our friends in French Canada and le Nouveau Monde published an article; now that sympathy with our cause is so great if we demand the amnesty, responsible government and protest against the cutting up of our parishes we will carry the day.
